Shell has been in Libya since the 1940s. Shell Exploration and Production Libya signed a long-term integrated agreement with the Libyan National Oil Corporation in May 2005, the first agreement of its kind to be signed in Libya, to extend the life of the existing Marsa Al-Brega plant and the exploration and development of five areas in the Sirte Basin, as well as increasing the existing LNG plant capacity and building a new, world-scale LNG Plant in Ras Lanuf.

BP Libya, in partnership with the National Oil Corporation and Libyan Investment Authority, is currently exploring in 54,000 square kilometres of exploration acreage in the offshore Sirt and onshore Ghadames basins. The project represents BP's single largest exploration commitment globally. It is also the largest single financial commitment for exploration an international energy company has ever made to Libya. Exploration drilling both onshore and offshore is scheduled to commence in mid-2010.
